Germany by train
Germany has a one of the world’s best and most efficient railway systems, which reaches almost every city of the country, while the trip will be comfortable, cheap and punctual. Trains in Germany are modern and fast. Both, first and second class trains, carry smoker and nonsmoker compartments. Regional trains connect the smaller towns and many of these are also used by commuters.
Long-distance trains are meticulously coordinated with local services, offering excellent connections. If you plan to use the train widely, you may want to look into purchasing a German Railpass or, if you have one, the Eurorailpass that could also be use for limited number of days.
The main passenger rail system in Germany is the Deutsche Bahn (DB, or GermanRail) that enables visitors to reach even smaller historical towns and the holiday regions with simplicity.
The most important rail networks are:
- InterCity (IC): Offers express service every hour between most large and medium size German cities. IC trains have a lot of services including telephone, bars, lounges and dining rooms.
- InterCity Express (ICE): Known as Germany's high-speed rail network. Trains are among the fastest in Europe, reaching speeds of up to 300km/h. ICE is the most expensive option, but it reduces travel time.
- InterCity Night (ICN): Is one of the most comfortable night trains in Europe and operates between Berlin – Bonn and Berlin – Munich. ICN offers first and tourist class. If you want sleeping accommodation (shower, toilet, key cards, phones for wake-up service, luggage storage, and other amenities) you have to make an advanced reservation.
Tickets are usually cheaper if purchased several days before travel, and children under 14 who are traveling with a parent or grandparent go free.
