The Cathedral of Cologne

Cologne Cathedral (Kölner Dom)

Cologne Cathedral is a beautiful church built since 1248 to 1880 on the site of a Roman Temple. It has finest aspects of Gothic architecture, being its towers the maximum expression of this style. Until 1889, when the Eiffel Tower was built, the Cologne Cathedral was considered the tallest structure in the world. Other important reliquary of the cathedral is the Shrine of the Three Magi, considered a work of art of the medieval epoch. In the Cathedral there are also The Gero Cross that is the oldest cross in northern Europe, and the “Milan Madonna” a famous wooden sculpture of Mary and the child Jesus.

The Cathedral has twelve bells; the biggest is the St. Peter bell with a weight of 24 tons. In order to support them, the structure of the Cathedral had to be really strong. For that reason the Cathedral wasn’t destroyed in the World War II and the few damages were repaired in 1956. Forty years later of its reconstruction, the Cathedral was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.
