Staatliche Museen Berlin

The 16 National Museums in Berlin (Staatliche Museen zu Berlin) are part of the Prussian culture heritage. The state museums were damaged in the Second World War and many museums lost important collections, but they were repaired and again are establishing their world class reputation.
The principal State museums: The Altes museum, Neus Museum, Bode Museum and the Pergamon Museum are reunited and connected by underground walkways in the Museum Island. In 1999 the Museum Island was added to the World Cultural Heritage list.

In the Tiergarten district there are the most important collections of European art, the principal museums are the National Gallery, the Picture Gallery and the Museum of Decorative Arts among others. Other state museums are in the Dahlem district such as the Museum of European Cultures, the Museum of Indian Arts and the Ethnological Museum. Finally, in Charlottenburg the most impressive museums are the Museum of Pre-and Early History, the Egyptian Museum and the Berggruen Collection "Picasso and his time".
