Altenburg Castle

The Altenburg Castle is an old German Castle that dominates Bamberg because of its location at the highest of the city’s seven hills. In the entrance of the castle, there is a beautiful chapel that was a form of insurance practiced in war times. The Castle was destroyed in 1553 and when it was repaired served only as a prison.
For many years it was famous for the live bear that resided in a cage there; nowadays visitors can see the bear cage with a stuffed bear inside. In 1801, the Castle was bought by A.F. Marcus who made all the necessary repairs. Years later, in 1818, the new owner Anton von Greifenstein founded an association to preserve the castle. Currently, the Altenburg Castle and grounds are open to the public.
