The city of Bamberg

The city of Bamberg is built on seven hills, just like Rome. For a short period of time, when Emperor Heinrich II lived in Bamberg, the city was the capital of the Holy Roman Empire. The city’s name is derived from Babenbergem whose castle was possibly situated on the present Cathedral hill. Now, the city preserves its appearance and distinctive character being referred as an “urban jewel”. Bamberg is also known as a University City for its large number of students at the Otto-Friedrich University.
Bamberg has a reputation as a city of art and culture; there many local cultural gems like Bamberg Symphony Orchestra and the E.T.A Hoffman Theatre. The city recognizes its role as an important tourist centre with the message of “living with history”.
